Congratulations seniors!! Today is your day- you made it! I’m sure by now you’ve all received Dr. Seuss’s “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” eaten lots of cake, shared pictures, reminisced on the beginnings of high school, said good-bye to the halls of your high school, and are dreaming about the future. You deserve it! Today, we want to honor your hard work and effort. We want you to know that you will always have a church home here. I was thinking back to my high school graduation and I remembered how I thought the summer wouldn’t go fast enough. Read the rest of this entry »

Education is so very valuable. Whether it is received through the rigors of daily life and hard work or through the student/teacher classroom experience, it is what shapes us as people looking to reach God’s purpose in life. You have heard it a thousand times, yet even at 1001, it is still true: One never stops learning. Education begins at day 1 and continues until our last breath. If not, we run the risk of becoming stuck in our day to day routine. How boring that would be. Read the rest of this entry »

Scientists make paper planes for space
A spacecraft made of folded paper zooming through the skies may sound far-fetched, but Japanese scientists plan to launch paper planes from the International Space Station to see if they make it back to Earth. Read the rest of this entry »

Acts 1:6-14
“So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their site. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’”
“Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.”

Have you ever noticed that we live in a loud world? It seems that we can’t go anywhere these days without being bombarded by noise. Most people can’t even ride in their cars in silence. We have cell phones, computers, IPODs, MP3 players, DVD players in our cars, anything to fill the silence. We have music in elevators because you can’t ride them in silence with strangers…it’s just too weird. Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday, I spent much of the afternoon working in the house and listeing to/watching the NFL draft. I am a football junkie, so any kind of football nugget I can get, I take. It is exciting to me to see the future of so many franchises hanging in the balance between the potential bust, first round pick, and the future 10 year all-pro. Who knows how these players will work out? With all of the conjecture and all of the predictions, only time will tell. Read the rest of this entry »

I read an article in the news the other day about the Titanic. Two metallurgy experts poured over research for years, studying the materials used to make the hull of the ship. They found that the iron rivets used in the bow and stern were possibly made with inferior metals. Their hypothesis is that when the rivets broke, it put too much stress on the rest of the boat, therefore allowing 6 compartments to be flooded. They think it is likely that if stronger components had been used in construction, maybe only 5 or 4 compartments would have been flooded and the boat would have sunk slower, allowing more people to get off the ship. There is also the possibility that with 4 compartments, they could have limped into port somewhere, saving almost everybody. Read the rest of this entry »

Have you ever seen those Magic Eye pictures? Where supposedly if you look at it the right way you can see picture underneath the pattern? I could never see those. Some people said that if you crossed your eyes and moved it slowly away from your face, you’d magically see it. I never did. If you’ve ever taken the time to mess around with a camera, you may have discovered that things look a little different through its lens. You can zoom in, zoom out, and change focus. If you really get into photography, you’ll learn that you can do even more by manipulation lighting and shutter speed. Read the rest of this entry »

The year 2006 saw the launch of the now very popular MTV Overdrive. Why? Because MTV recognized that so many teenagers were watching their programming that they could make even more money by connecting audiences to their internet site and offering exclusive web clips and promos. Brilliant! Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome back from spring break. I hope it was restful for you, no matter what you did. Did you go somewhere? Did you go somewhere fun in your head?
We are in the home stretch, as summer is just around the corner. It may not feel like it, but in another few weeks, school is over for the year! For me, a graduate, this means a scary new beginning in life, as I once again move from full-time student to full-time worker. Read the rest of this entry »

I LOVE stuff like this, so let me just tell you plainly as if you had approached me yourself. Yes, I did make an effort last week to point out those, like myself, who were dressed “like Easter eggs”! I almost always make a point to talk to as many people about “whatever” as I can. Sunday was Easter and a good day to talk about outfits. Read the rest of this entry »

John 20:24,25 - “But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe’.”
Man, have I ever felt like this before. I identify so much with Thomas and his expression of doubt. Don’t we feel this way today? “I need proof!” Faith is so much harder without proof. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Easter Sunday! It is a good thing, for after a week of the expectation of the death of Christ and a few days of mourning, Christians feel joyous again. Of course, you may wonder, did I ever feel as reflective or sad as I should have during Holy Week? You might say: “I knew about the days…Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Saturday just felt like a normal day to me. I am thankful for what Jesus did for me but Holy week just flew by like any other week. Is there something wrong with me?” Read the rest of this entry »

One of my former students sent this and I wanted to share it with you. It is Easter Sunday and what you need to remember is simple, HE IS RISEN!!!

When Christ mumbled, “It is finished”
Many thought the book was closed
But the gift God gave through Mary
Broke the bonds of death and rose Read the rest of this entry »

It was Palm Sunday, and the family’s 6-year-old son had to stay home from church because of strep throat. When the rest of the family returned home carrying palm branches, the little boy asked what they were for. His mother explained, “People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by.” Read the rest of this entry »

Matthew 21:6-11
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.” (NSRV) Read the rest of this entry »

The approaching of Easter Sunday has me thinking about transformation. Yes, “Transformers” was a good movie, but I’m not talking about cinema. I’m talking about the transformation that human beings experience when they are guided through life by the hands of God. Do you remember where you’ve been? Can you see where you are going? I state that you cannot forget from where you came, so that you CAN see where you are going. Read the rest of this entry »

You have heard me use the “I” word many times. You know the importance I have placed on the word. The “I” word is INTEGRITY.
The mind is a powerful thing. We are reminded in the Bible that we ARE what we think about (Proverbs 23:7). Did you get a good look at the verse? Check it out. Not only do you act upon what you think about, you become what you think about! Sort of scary, huh? Read the rest of this entry »
