This weekend was amazing for me. I got to hang out all day Saturday and some Friday night, with a most amazing youth group. Whirly Ball was a blast! We did some good local mission work down at Safehouse. For me, Disciple Now ’08 was a success.
I want to relay a story, through our leader from Saturday (Dave), about a man named Tim Burroughs. If you were with us at Safehouse, Dave was using the “rock N’ roll” microphone and you may not have been able to hear the full story. Tim played in the NBA for 8 years. He was a multi-millionaire. He tried crack cocaine one time and his life was never the same. He lost everything, ended up on the street and was months away from passing on.
Today, Tim works at Safehouse and is one of their largest (and I mean largest…he is 6’9”!) assets in reaching out to those who were in his situation, before the people at Safehouse “gave him a hand up” in getting his life together. These stories are one of many I heard from the workers and volunteers there on Saturday. This ministry is doing Gospel work. And Smoke Rise should be thankful that we got an opportunity to work for a few hours, cleaning their floors and painting their walls.
Every day, I try to be thankful that my mistakes in life did not snowball into homelessness, sickness and perceived hopelessness. I am glad that this church and this youth group are willing to work hard, so that others in the same shape as Tim Burroughs will have a place which continues to do work to help those out of their situations. Did we build some community last Saturday? I think we did.
Awesomeness Abounding!
